U.S. Army suicides set to hit record high in 2009

WASHINGTON, Nov 17 (Reuters) – Suicides in the U.S. Army will hit a new high this year, a top general said on Tuesday in a disclosure likely to increase concerns about stress on U.S. forces ahead of an expected buildup in Afghanistan.

The findings, released as President Barack Obama inches toward a decision to send up to 40,000 additional troops to Afghanistan, show the number of active-duty suicides so far in 2009 has already matched last year’s record of 140 deaths.

"We are almost certainly going to end the year higher than last year," General Peter Chiarelli, the Army’s vice chief of staff, told a Pentagon briefing.

"This is horrible, and I do not want to downplay the significance of these numbers in any way."

Another 71 soldiers committed suicide after being taken off active duty in 2009 — nearly 25 percent more than the end-year total for 2008. Some had returned home only weeks before taking their own lives.

The figures applied only to the U.S. Army. Data from other branches of the armed services was not immediately available.

Chiarelli cautioned against generalizing about the causes of the suicides, or assuming links to combat stress on forces stretched thin by the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

He said the causes were still unclear and noted that roughly a third of the soldiers who took their own lives had never been deployed abroad.

The Army recently revealed that about one in five lower rank soldiers suffered mental health problems like depression.

The latest data and this month’s shooting spree at a base in Fort Hood, Texas attributed to an Army psychiatrist have raised new questions about the effects of combat stress and the state of the military’s mental health system.

The top U.S. military officer said on Tuesday deployments were still manageable even though troops would be operating in a "stress window for the next couple of years."

African-Americans slam Pres. Obama in White House protest, demand an end to Afghan War. Decry Obama as “white power in black face”….

WASHINGTON — Decrying Barack Obama as “white power in black face,” hundreds of African-Americans marched on the White House Saturday to protest policies of the first black US president, and demand that he bring US troops home.
More than 200 people gathered for the first public demonstration by African Americans against the Obama administration since his historic inauguration in January, and slammed the president for continuing what they described as Washington’s “imperialist” agenda around the world.
“We recognize that Barack Hussein Obama is white power in black face,” civil rights activist Omali Yeshitela, chairman of the Black is Back coalition which arranged the protest, called into a megaphone as the group marched outside the mansion’s gates.
“He is a tool of our imperialist enemies and we demand our freedom. And we demand that Obama withdraw all the troops from Afghanistan right now.”
Protesters also called for Obama to order troops out of Iraq and to scrap Africom, the controversial year-old United States Africa Command, and demanded “hands off” Venezuela and ends to the Cuba embargo and the Zimbabwe blockade.
Several demonstrators held up placards bearing messages such as “US out of Afghanistan” and “Stop US war against Iraq.”
Charles Baron, a New York city councilman and former member of the Black Panthers, a Black Power movement in the mid-1960s and 1970s, attacked the president for turning a cold shoulder to the plight of African-Americans.
“We’re not satisfied with him, and… this hope and change rap has not been a reality for black people,” Baron told AFP during the demonstration.

News last week of the first major influx of Chinese capital and wind turbine manufacturing expertise into the renewable energy market in the United States — a 600-megawatt wind farm planned for the plains of west Texas — had many readers of the Green Inc. blog in a state of agitation.

“I don’t understand why China is exporting wind energy to the U.S.,” wrote Mark from New York City. “Isn’t this exactly the kind of project a United States company could and should be doing?”

Another reader — Drew from Boston — was more blunt: “Again, China is playing the West for a sucker,” he wrote. “We send them our engineering, they get the manufacturing work and experience.”

The details of the deal known so far: Contingent on financing from Chinese commercial banks — and no small measure of funding from the U.S. economic stimulus package — A-Power Energy Generation Systems, a Nasdaq-listed company based in the Chinese industrial city of Shenyang, would provide 240 of its 2.5-megawatt wind turbines for a 36,000-acre, or 14,600-hectare, utility-scale wind farm in west Texas to be operated by Cielo Wind Power, a developer based in Austin.

The total cost of the project, which was brokered in part by the U.S. Renewable Energy Group, an American private equity company, was estimated at $1.5 billion. At an event after the announcement in Washington on Thursday, Cappy McGarr, a managing partner at the company, was beaming.

“This planned $1.5 billion investment in wind energy will spur tremendous growth in the renewable energy sector,” Mr. McGarr was quoted in a news release as saying, “and directly create hundreds of high-paying American jobs.”

The devil, though — as many observers pointed out by the end of the week — is in the details.

The group’s calculations last week put the number of American jobs at a little more than 300 — most of them temporary construction jobs, along with about 30 permanent positions once the wind farm is operating. Mr. McGarr told The Wall Street Journal that more than 2,000 Chinese jobs would be created by the deal.

Congress approved a measure to dramatically expand the existing federal hate crimes law, by adding it to an unrelated defense appropriations bill.  The measure would expand current law to cover virtually all hate crimes already covered by state law (both by adding gender, sexual orientation, disability, and transgender characteristics to a law originally designed to protect racial minorities, and by getting rid of the requirement that a hate crime effect federally-protected activities to be prosecuted in federal rather than state court.)

The army suicide rate is now higher than that among the general American population. The rate has been calculated as 20.2 per 100,000 soldiers, compared with 19.5 per 100,000 civilians. This is a shocking statistic, as soldiers theoretically are screened for mental illnesses before enlistment and have access to counselling and health services that millions of ordinary people cannot afford.

Bernice King and Martin Luther King III issued their brother Dexter King in July 2008, one month after accusing him of converting "substantial funds from the estate's financial account at Bank of America" for his own use, according to the lawsuit

The lawsuit contends Dexter King illegally and fraudulently converted estate funds and should be forced to repay the money and reimburse the plaintiffs' legal costs. The document, which lists five counts, does not say how much he is accused of taking.

Odell Thurman rebounds in the New Pro Football League, the UFL…..

It may finally be time for Odell Thurmanto smile again.

After being drafted in the second round by the Cincinnati Bengals in the 2005 NFL Draft, Thurman had reason to beoptimistic.

Like LB Odell Thurman. The runnerup for the 2001 NFL defensive rookie of the year -- Chargers Shawne Merriman won -- with the Cincinnati Bengals, Thurman has not played in a game since 2005. He spent the past four years dealing with off-field issues, as well as the passing of his grandmother, whom he called his "backbone.

He was a cornerstone of the team’s young defense led by Head Coach Marvin Lewis.

He wasted no time justifying the Bengals’ pick, as he recorded 106 tackles and 1.5 sacks, while leading an aggressive defense. Thurman was responsible for 10 forced turnovers (five interceptions and five forced fumbles), nine deflections, and even a defensive touchdown.

With his talent and experience, Thurman is a near lock to make the Tuskers final roster and start, giving him the perfect launching-pad back to the NFL.

Needless to say, the future was bright for Thurman and Cincinnati, as the Bengals made the playoffs with an impressive 11-5 record.

However, Cincinnati fell to the rival Pittsburgh Steelers in their playoff opener, 31-17, lost their star quarterback Carson Palmer to a knee injury, and have never been the same.

The loss of their stud in the middle, Thurman, might have had something to do with it.

Never a poster-boy for high character, Thurman found himself in the midst of many off-field issues, as he battled drug and alcohol problems.  After several failed NFL tests, Thurman was suspended by the league for the first four games of the 2006 season, and after Thurman failed to make any progress, the suspension was extended for the remainder of the season.

The next season proved to be even more difficult for Thurman, as alcohol and violence issues prompted another year-long suspension from the league, and inevitably led to his final release for the team prior to the 2008 season.

Thurman failed to latch-on with another club last year, and when the same seemed destined to happen for 2009, he cut his losses and joined the up-start UFL’s Florida Tuskers.

WALE joins Jay-Z’s North American College Arena Tour kicking off tomorrow….

After being hailed as “the greatest new rapper since Jay-Z” (GQ, June 2009), Wale will be featured on hip-hop giant Jay-Z’s new tour North American College Arena Tour.

The tour will make 24 stops at a mix of college campus arenas and traditional venues across North America kicking off at Penn State University on October 9th. Oklahoma State receiver Dez Bryant ineligible to play for Lying to NCAA….the NCAA wants all the Money, you can’t make none.

All-America wide receiver Dez Bryant has been ruled ineligible by Oklahoma State, four days before the 15th-ranked Cowboys’ first Big 12 game.

"I made a mistake by not being entirely truthful when meeting with the NCAA," Bryant said in a statement released by the university. "I sincerely regret my mistake and apologize to my teammates, coaches, OSU fans and the NCAA."

The university announced Wednesday that Bryant “failed to openly disclose to the NCAA the full details of his interaction with a former NFL player not affiliated with OSU.”

Oklahoma State (3-1) said it had already begun the process of asking the NCAA to reinstate Bryant for the violation of bylaw 10.1(d), which prohibits players from knowingly providing false information to the NCAA regarding a possible rules violation.

The university announced Wednesday that Bryant "failed to openly disclose to the NCAA the full details of his interaction with a former NFL player not affiliated with OSU."

However, NCAA spokeswoman Stacey Osburn said no student-athlete reinstatement request had been received from OSU. She said it is NCAA policy not to comment on current, pending or potential investigations.

CLARK ATLANTA UNIVERSITY will Sneak Peak MANSFIELD 12 to kickoff BET HIP HOP Awards Weekend 2009

Craig Ross Jr. will premiere his award winning film The Mannsfield 12, at Clark Atlanta University in part with BET Hip Hop Awards Weekend. In lieu of the upcoming BET premiere, which airs next month, CAUs Campus Activities Board (CAB), is hosting an official screening of The Mannsfield 12 at the Carl & Mary Ware Student Activities Center in the heart of the AUC.

THE MANNSFIELD 12 Debuts on Myspace on 090/29/09. The first film ever to be distributed on a socail networking site.

Subsequent to the screening, Ross Jr. (writer, producer and director of the film), will make himself available for an exclusive Q&A and cast members Joe Torry (Poetic Justice), Aaron D. Spears (The Bold and the Beautiful) and William L. Johnson (Motives 2), are set to join him.

The official Mannsfield 12 BET Hip Hop Awards Pre-party will be held the following night at Club 495 in Atlanta.

The Mannsfield 12 marks Ross’s 7th project as an independent feature film director and he is showing no signs of slowing down. Armed with a brilliant script and capable cast, The Mannsfield 12, has unsurprisingly won Ross two awards – one being “Best Director” and another for “Best Screenplay.” Through his many accomplishments Craig Ross Jr.’s has become known as one of the premiere urban independent filmmakers in Hollywood. In short, The Mannsfield 12 tells the story of a small group of men that come to grips with the reality that being good at what they did made them criminals…and standing up for who they were, made them legends.

“I did the movie because I hadn’t seen anything like it before,” Ross Jr. said. “I asked myself what if these inmates had made different choices in their lives… ‘Where would they be now?'”

Iconic hip hop group Public Enemy leads a new revolution in the music business as it announces a partnership with SellaBand.com to finance the recording of their next album through fan funding.

If you are holding U.S. dollars in a savings account, CD or money-market fund, you are slowly losing what you have saved or inherited and within a few short years could lose the bulk of what is remaining. It is being done in such a way that most people don’t notice. The hidden tax of inflation has been robbing you for quite some time and the pace and severity of this theft is increasing rapidly. If I sound alarmist, it is with intention.

The dollar has lost over 30% of its value in the past 7 years. That means if you held $100,000 in a savings account, you would now only be able to buy $70,000 worth of goods and services with it. You might still see the number “$100,000” on your statement, but because the government and Fed have been printing so much money, the value of all of those dollars has been declining rapidly and this drop in value is about to accelerate at breakneck speed. We could even witness a dollar collapse, in which case you will be lucky if your dollars maintain 10 or 20% of their current value. This means that everything that you have saved or worked hard for in life could quickly disappear if your wealth is stored in dollars. Those that purchased a home in the past 6-8 years already have a taste of how quickly this can happen. But you have a good job, so new money will keep flowing in right?
